“District construction firm Trebinje” (which was later renamed “NEIMARSTVO”) was founded in late 1947, but started operating on January the 1st 1948. At that time, the firm owned only a truck, and it was the only mechanization. Other tools, like spade and pickaxe were brought by workers themselves, from their homes. The first project was construction of regional road connecting Lastva and Nudo, villages in Trebinje municipality. The next project was widening of road connecting Lastva and Niksic, and then follows the project of road construction from Trebinje to Ivanjica village, which is the part of road leading to Dubrovnik.
During the 1950s, “District construction firm Trebinje” built a couple of small constructions in Trebinje and Children resort in Cavtat. In this period, the first cement mixer was obtained, and shortly afterwards two more, which was at that time highly technical innovation. The firm, however, hardly survived until 1955 when it was renamed NEIMARSTVO. From 1955 there was a mild rise. During the following ten years, certain progress was evident, but too slow. At the beginning of the 1960s, NEIMARSTVO built the post office building with 6 counters plus the second floor which was 150 m2 in size where technical support was. In 1963, the workers of “Construction material and concrete blocks production-GAMON” joined NEIMARSTVO. One or two years afterwards, construction firms “Popovac” from Zavala and “Vidusa” from Bileca merged with NEIMARSTVO. Some time later, “GAT” from Gacko and “Gradjevinar” from Ljubinje merged with NEIMARSTVO as well. This proved to be the right thing.
The first significant period this company had after 1965, when it was obvious that it specialized in certain kinds of construction work. NEIMARSTVO got business offers outside Trebinje municipality, especially on Dalmatian and Montenegrin coast.
In 1964, successful projects followed one after another. High school building in Trebinje was built, with capacity of 2000 students, “Vila Lastva” catering service building near Trebinje, Medical centre in Trebinje, “Atlantic navigation building” in Dubrovnik, Resort in Budva for workers of iron foundries in Niksic and Sevojno, PTT from Belgrade, port warehouse, shipyard and new water supply system in Dubrovnik, silos in Bileca and many resorts and hotels on Peljesec peninsula.
Since 1970, “Construction and prefabrication Company NEIMARSTVO”, due to merger with a couple of firms and engagement in many projects, now employs a lot of workers and is second biggest company in Trebinje-as in number of workers, so in salary scales. The biggest and most successful company was “Tool production Trebinje”.
During the 1960s, NEIMARSTVO gained good reputation for its quick and high quality construction. It proved a success in Orebic, where NEIMARSTVO built hotels in 1963, and in the 1970s tourist resorts, residential and other facilities were also built there. As a consequence of these business engagements, every year NEIMARSTVO would employ about 100 workers.
In 1971 NEIMARSTVO built Culture centre in Trebinje, constructed annexes and reconstructed some buildings for “Tool production Trebinje”, Bey’s house, and some other firms. Hotel “Tjentiste” and Youth club in Gacko were also built…
In 1972, NEIMARSTVO employees were mostly engaged in Prznom near Tivat, where tourist-catering service company “Globus” invested into hotels and a modern camp site. The best example of this business engagement was The Plavi horizonti hotel.
At that time, workers would work all year long, and NEIMARSTVO Company broadened its business by establishing the branch and production line for concrete blocks production, in addition to having successful workers and managers. In the same year, NEIMARSTVO finished the project of “Auto rad” business premises, an annexe of Leotar hotel, head office building for “Hydroelectric power plant over the Trebisnjica River”, town bakery, car park of “Auto-moto savez “, an annexe of Medical centre in Trebinje, Sports-recreation centre and “Vuk Karadzic”school.
The following year, besides projects and construction sites in neighbouring federal units, NEIMARSTVO proved a success in its “home town”. Olympic swimming-pool was finished, and in 1974 locker room, grandstand and sanitary facilities as well. In the local newspaper “The Voice of Trebinje”, May the 15th issue, it was written that year after year, NEIMARSTVO ran its business very successfully, which is an important fact since similar construction companies were not in a good position. Every year, plans, project completion and salaries would grow and become better. Construction business takes third place in order of importance in Trebinje municipality, right after trade and industry. During all these years, NEIMARSTVO was building residential facilities in the region of Herzegovina. Up to 1973 about 500 flats were built in Trebinje. By the beginning of tourist season of 1974, NEIMARSTVO reconstructed and built an annexe of the Belvi hotel for the hotel company from Orebic. The hotel itself was of “B” rank, with the capacity of 70 rooms, i.e. 145 beds and was situated on Peljesac peninsula. Before this, the Orsan and the Rataneum hotels were built and threaded the way for NEIMARSTVO constructors. In 1974, the following projects were in progress: the second phase of construction of Novoteks factory (clothing industry), department store “Borac” from Travnik, Public home in Bileca, a motel near Blecko Lake and a number of residential facilities. All these projects were done by NEIMARSTVO, of course.
In the same year, an annexe for school children clinic and children clinic, clinic for workers, clinic for women, centre for physical therapy and health recovery were being built. This annexe was within the Medical centre Trebinje.
Also, the construction of a new bus station started, as well as reconstruction and construction of annexes for “Tool production Trebinje” and “Printing firm Trebinje”. In the same year, an annexe of High school in Trebinje was completed (with 8 classrooms and 2 laboratories), a kindergarten in Bregovi, a new workshop for “Textile industry Bilecanka” from Bileca. Up to 1974 about 1000 flats were constructed.
In 1975, first steps towards the company modernization were made, and cooperation with Institutes for construction material examination was developed. After thorough analyses, a number of projects were carried out as well. Construction material production, together with building construction (which became specialty of NEIMARSTVO Company) found its place in the market and contributed good management of the company. At the beginning of 1975, an annexe for High school in Trebinje was finished, and the Park hotel in Korcula. Construction of Department store “Borac”, 120 flats in Gacko and a new production line for “Tool production Trebinje” in Posusje is in its last phase.
In 1976, a new business success followed. Branch office building for “Privredna banka Sarajevo”, above mentioned production line in Posusje, modern Hall of residence in Trebinje, Bus station in Trebinje, and Department store “Borac Travnik” were completed. This year is also significant for foundation of a Concrete factory and a Concrete prefabs factory in Gorica, near Gorica Lake.
After the Park hotel in Korcula was finished, the construction of a Primary school and Catering service facilities started in Orebic as well as a Hall of residence in Bileca. This year was one of the most productive years for NEIMARSTVO Company concerning construction of buildings in Trebinje, according to statistic data. Youth club project was finished, as well as the construction of an annexe for Medical centre Trebinje. Primary school construction in Petrovo polje, production line for “Tool production Trebinje” in Hum and a number of residential facilities were in progress. On the top of all this, in 1976 NEIMARSTVO won (together with “Hydroelectric power plant over the Trebisnjica River”) recognition for “extraordinary results in many fields of social life-on the Liberation day of Trebinje”
The following year the production line in Posusje was opened, which was finished the year before, but for the first time in former Yugoslavia, some workings are done on a construction which is finished, and this was done by NEIMARSTVO. This is a very complex project of tunneling through the dam on Hydroelectric power plant 2, which is a part of the Company “Hydroelectric power plant over the Trebisnjica River”. The Company had already gained some experience in constructing metal prefabricated buildings for hydroelectric projects. In the same year, “Tool production” factory in Nevesinje was finished, an annexe of “Tool production Trebinje” was built, a foundation stone for “Tool production” factory in Ravno was laid; Hall of residence in Trebinje and Primary school in Petrovo polje were opened. Health centre in Korcula and Outpatient clinic in Orebic were also opened.
In Trebinje’s settlement Mokri dolovi over 120 flats were constructed. In 1978, Telecommunications centre in Police started working. NEIMARSTVO built a new building for it, as well as a new chemical laboratory for “Tool production Trebinje” and a production line in Ravno. In Trebinje’s settlement Gorica, 2 residential buildings and a supermarket were finished. NEIMARSTVO is more and more engaged in projects in neighbouring Montenegro. In 1980, the biggest construction site of NEIMARSTVO is in Cetinje, where 100 flats, a hotel and factory workshops for “Obod” were being built.
At that time, flats were constructed using the modern system of “tunnel facings”, in which one floor can be constructed in one day, on the condition that there is enough construction material. Thanks to the quicker system of building, besides Montenegro, Trebinje’s constructors were also engaged in Vela Luka, where the new supermarket was constructed. In Bileca, a new workshop for Forge was constructed as well as Kindergarten in Police and the Ognjiste motel in Aleksina Medja which represents the fusion of modern and traditional style.
The construction of “Special tools factory” for heavy metal tools production and “Special tools factory” for high-speed steel tool production started. These two factories are branches of “Tool production Trebinje” Company and were finished the following year. Zoran Kukurekovic, the branch manager of NEIMARSTVO Company in Trebinje gave an interview for local newspaper “The Voice of Trebinje” and said: “NEIMARSTVO Company is capable of constructing anything concerning building construction that other, bigger companies can.” In 1981 a new Primary school building was built in Gorica, and a modern trade center in Ivanica (a village between Trebinje and Dubrovnik). In the years that follow, NEIMARSTVO Company was engaged in many projects, but in mid-1980 the business stagnated. So, in 1982 a number of residential facilities were built as well as a new Agricultural society building and a supermarket in Zasad. The following year, an annexe was built for business offices of “Printing firm” in Trebinje; two floors of “Novoteks” Company were completed as well as a Primary school building in Bregovi, which was constructed with NEIMARSTVO partners.
In 1984, 110 flats were finished in “Tini”, a new settlement in Trebinje. Since in mid-1980 construction business faced crisis, the manager of NEIMARSTVO, Dragan Runjevac in 1984 expressed his optimistic view about the plans in NEIMARSTVO Company, but the investment in construction is rather reduced, and as a consequence of this, the competition increased-so the reserves are called for. In the late 1980s, NEIMARSTVO constructed an annexe and reconstructed the Leotar hotel with the capacity of 100 beds, as well as the bungalows in Srebreno, catering facilities in Lastva, Zavala and Zubacka Ubla-for UTP Leotar Company. In 1987, Trebinje got a sports hall, being waited for so long. It was constructed by NEIMARSTVO Company. The constructors of NEIMARSTVO also worked on the project of building a new production line of “Novoteks” Company, which was finished in the same year. Former Yugoslavia faced economic and construction business crisis (which was an important branch of economy), and it affected NEIMARSTVO as well. In NEIMARSTVO Company price rise was marked in 1987 and 1988 and it was a hard strike at the construction business. There were price rise of iron, fuel, electricity, and there also appeared unfair competition. All this contributed to the stagnation in business that culminated with the beginning of civil war in former Yugoslavia. The mechanization and complete equipment of NEIMARSTVO Company which was modernized was completely destroyed during the war, although Trebinje didn’t actually face the real war. For example, at the beginning of the civil war, there were 12 mixers, 12 cranes, thousands of square meters of plank of wood and tunnel facings, tens of containers, many loaders, bulldozers, dump trucks and other equipment. Concrete factory in Lucin Do was completely destroyed. Bad business trends continued even after the war, so immediately after the Dayton peace agreement was signed (the period between 1996 and 2002), NEIMARSTVO faced a big loss, and many factors contributed to this, among others careless attitude towards company’s property, that was sold, borrowed and simply taken away. In one word, it disappeared. |
